What…is…this?
Hello there! To be completely honest with you I don’t have a single specific reason as to why I decided to create this blog. Maybe I just want a place where I can dump my thoughts or perhaps feelings after a disgusting topdeck by my opponent after a long grind game,you might not believe it but they do still exist. One more reason is that writing in public might help me improve my proficiency in english writing. Hopefully it will improve…can’t wait to look back at anything I write in a few years and cringe.
Who am I?
Well, I don’t really to share my identity anytime soon as I am a rather shy person. If someone else is reading this wondering of how to call me, then you can just use either Bamboo or Black as the full nickname I use online is Bamboo Black. Why that nickname? My favorite art card has Naturia Bamboo Shoot since I was a kid, hence why I chose to name the blog and some of my accounts after it. The black is simply because I once read about Kitasan Black, a racehorse, and thought that name was way to hard for no reason. It made me realise that even something as simple as color can be used to create a cool nickname.
Enough of that and more of Yu-Gi-Oh. I am somewhat of OG Yu-Gi-Oh player considering that I have come across the game when Monarch Control (~2007) was meta. At the time I was still a kid and it wasn’t until the Dino Rabbit (~2012) meta that I would start to view the game in a competitive way. I’ve had my fair share of pauses over the years (mostly due to life), e.g., my first one was before the links were introduced in the game and pendulum summoning like a psychopath was still the norm.
The last thing I remember from that period was Konami calling an emergency ban on PePe, which at the time was already incredibly good and had just received support that would simply cause another monometa. If I recall correctly, the game had recently gone through the Nekroz monometa. It was a bit shocking because people did spend a lot for that deck and that new version with the support didn’t even a chance to compete in a single big tournament, hence why the yu-gi-oh community fuming made sense for once. Would be nice if they did something about toon but it’s not as oppressive as PePe and Tele-DAD during their time.
Going back to me, I primarily play TCG Advanced with no particular interest in older formats even though a lot of the play I used to play with seem to really like. I do understand the allure of it but I, most sometimes, don’t mind playing advanced because if when we don’t have a messy meta it feels like another form of resource management with way more interactions. I don’t play on Master Duel mostly because I don’t have the time to grind a build the decks that I like but also because I don’t really like the single game format.
I would consider myself an average duelist when it comes to rulings and a bit above average when it comes to card, hence why I like to play rogues or funky versions of meta decks. _It’s just so much fun when you opponent reacts to a card they have never seen. That was pretty much it with a lot of yapping.
What do I plan to write about?
I will focus on writing articles about decks that I play, my reflections on different cards that can be used, budget version (often based on my own) compared to how I would probably them if I could use any card. I use Dueling Book as my testing platform as I am quite isolated geographically.
One series that I will probably document in this blog will be my road to becoming a judge. In my opinion a good understanding rulings on a judge level is necessary for competitive player because it helps you navigate odd scenarios that you might encounter every 30-50 games which could very well define the outcome of the game. Personally, I never experienced one in a tournament bubble or top but I know for a fact that, for me, it would hurt much more to mess up due to the lack of knowledge then a misplay.
Occasionally I might write about some funny stories about locals, events or anything related to the community that I’ve come across during the years. If someone else is gonna read them, then hopefully we could have others share their own funny stories on here for more laughs.
